From his childhood years learning to build a wall alongside his father, through his teenage years as a hip-hop pioneer, to his adulthood where he faced personal and professional challenges, his story is a showcase of unbreakable perseverance and determination. The summation of this book offers a glimpse of the key moments that shaped his life and career, and reveals what is truly behind the success of this charismatic artist.

An important decision

In 1985, Will Smith, a seventeen-year-old boy from West Philadelphia, found himself on the cusp of a major life decision. He lived in the middle-class Wynnefield neighborhood, where his family had a relatively comfortable life. He did well enough in school that he had a chance to get into a good college, which was extremely important to his mother. His mother, who had grown up in a poor family and achieved success through education, believed that college was the key to a better future, especially for a young black man. However, Will's grades began to deteriorate, which was due to his growing enthusiasm for hip-hop. From the moment his cousin introduced him to the musical genre, he became active in rapping. Together with DJ Jeff Townes, they formed the duo Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, which quickly gained popularity first in Philadelphia and later in New York. Although hip-hop was still new at the time and considered something less serious, Will saw huge potential in it. However, this interest led to a serious rift with his mother, who considered hip-hop a hobby, not a career. The conflict came to a head when Will announced that he didn't want to go to college, which deeply affected his mother. In this standoff, his father intervened, sharing his mother's value of education, but also understanding Will's passion for music. This ambivalent attitude of his father was influenced by his own desire for an artistic career, which, however, he had to sacrifice. Eventually a deal was struck: Will would be given a year to try to break into the music industry. If he fails, he'll go to college. This decision was pivotal for Will because it gave him the opportunity to devote himself fully to music without completely neglecting his mother's vision for his future. This moment in his life was the beginning of a journey that would eventually lead him to unprecedented success and change his life forever.

Fresh Prince

Hip-hop was born on the streets of New York City, where DJs at street parties played the best parts of popular songs in loops and MCs interacted with the audience through rhyming lyrics. In the 1980s, hip-hop was still in its infancy, considered underground and "fresh". Will Smith, performing under the stage name Fresh Prince, quickly became one of the pioneers of this new musical movement. There were many talented young people in high school, but Will stood out for his ability to make an audience laugh. While others tried to impress with their grittiness and gangster image, Will was able to captivate with his comical touches and witty remarks. For example, if he saw that someone's pants were sitting too high over their shoes, he would immediately exploit it in his rapping. This humor and ability to entertain an audience was the result not only of natural talent, but also of the tireless work ethic Will inherited from his father. While others spent their time skipping classes and smoking weed, Will filled his notebooks with rhymes, practiced his verses, and honed his performances in front of the mirror. Because of this perseverance, he didn't have to rely on a rugged image to succeed. His first big success came in 1986, when Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince released their debut single "Girls Ain't Nothing but Trouble," to a positive response. The album "Rock the House" followed in 1987, which sold over 500,000 copies. But the real breakthrough came with 1988's "He's the DJ, I'm the Rapper". This album, which included hits like "Parents Just Don't Understand," went platinum with sales exceeding three million copies and won the pair a coveted Grammy Award. At the time, Will Smith was only twenty years old and already felt he had everything he had ever dreamed of - fame, fortune and admiration. He was on top of the world and felt invincible. But this meteoric rise also exposed him to new challenges and temptations that eventually led to his downfall. Will Smith had to learn that success and fame are not always synonymous with happiness and inner peace.

Falling to the bottom

By the time Will Smith became famous and wealthy, he began to feel empty and without purpose in life. This period culminated when he discovered that his long-time girlfriend of sixteen years, Melanie Parker, had cheated on him. Although he had fame, money, and a new house he bought for them, without her everything seemed meaningless. The relationship with Melanie was pivotal for Will, and when she betrayed him, he began to doubt himself and his abilities. This feeling of inferiority led him to try to fill the void with material things and a loose lifestyle. He bought luxury cars and other houses, but none of this brought him inner satisfaction. His father, who was always critical of his material desires, often admonished him that excessive luxuries would not bring him happiness. In Philadelphia, Will began to move in shady circles and became involved with local gangsters. Although he struggled to find excitement and fulfillment in such a lifestyle, his inner emptiness persisted. Because of his unattached lifestyle, he began to neglect his career. As a result, his 1989 album "And in This Corner" was a commercial failure. He spent huge sums on recording, but spent most of his time partying and entertaining, which was reflected in the poor quality of the result. The situation got even worse when it was discovered that he hadn't paid his income taxes, which led to the IRS seizing all of his assets. He found himself broke, plus he learned that his gangster friends were under surveillance by the FBI. At this point, he had nothing left to look for in Philadelphia and decided to leave for Los Angeles with hopes of a fresh start. He borrowed money for a down payment on an apartment and a plane ticket, hoping to find a new direction and rebuild his life in Los Angeles.

Change

Will Smith moved to Los Angeles in 1989 to start a new life after setbacks in Philadelphia. In Los Angeles, he met Benny Medina, a television producer who had his own inspiring story behind him. Medina grew up in the Watts slum of Los Angeles, but through fortunate circumstances came into the care of a wealthy white family in Bel-Air. This contrast between his original environment and his new life inspired Medina to write a screenplay based on his own experiences. Will and Benny met, and Medina asked him the fateful question: "Can you act?" Will, who had never had any formal acting training, was aware, however, that performing in front of an audience and evoking emotion was something he had mastered. Despite his initial disbelief, Benny concluded that Will had the necessary talent and charisma to become the star of a TV show. A few months later, Will received an invitation to the birthday party of Quincy Jones, the legendary producer. Quincy was ready to act immediately and created an impromptu audition right at the party where all the important people in the TV industry were present. Will was given a script, had ten minutes to prepare and had to showcase his performance in front of a demanding audience. Will's natural talent and charisma charmed everyone in attendance, and after the impromptu audition, he landed the lead role in "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air." This moment was a turning point for Will. The series began filming and the first episode aired on September 10, 1990. "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" became a huge hit and catapulted Will Smith into the spotlight as a talented actor. Will's move to Hollywood was not only the beginning of his acting career, but also a major turning point in his life. He was given the opportunity to reinvent himself and rebuild his professional and personal life. This turnaround not only allowed him to find a new direction, but also to get back on his feet and continue to build his successful career.

Meeting Spielberg

Will Smith's career began to boom after the success of the series "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air". However, one of the key moments in his career was a phone call from Steven Spielberg himself. Will had just turned down a role in "Men in Black", but Spielberg invited him to a meeting to explain his vision for the film. The helicopter ride to Spielberg's mansion in the Hamptons made Will nervous. He wanted to make it clear that he liked the idea, but also explain why he thought the timing was wrong. When he arrived, he met Spielberg, who was dressed casually, which helped ease the tension. Spielberg had an important message for Will. He explained to him that "Men in Black" is not just a movie about aliens, but it is first and foremost the story of a hero's journey. This story arc, where the hero overcomes obstacles to find inner strength and gain wisdom, is universal and resonates with people all over the world. Spielberg believes that these stories have the ability to move, make us laugh and inspire. This encounter changed Will's perspective on screenplays and film projects. Spielberg convinced him to accept a role in the film "Men in Black" and revealed to him the key to success in the film industry: finding stories that have a deep emotional impact and a universal message. This encounter not only changed Will's mind about a particular film, but also his overall approach to choosing projects. Thanks to Spielberg's wise guidance, Will learned that successful films are not just about special effects and big budgets, but more importantly about powerful stories and the emotional experiences they bring to audiences. This lesson became the foundation for Will's future career. In the years that followed, he became one of the most successful actors of his generation, choosing projects that combined action with a deep emotional core. "Men in Black" became a huge hit, proving that Spielberg's vision and Will's ability to bring the characters to life on screen were an unbeatable combination.

As a father

In 1998, Will Smith gave birth to his second son, Jaden. As Jaden grew older, he began to follow in his father's footsteps, and by the age of 12, he was starring in the film "The Karate Kid" alongside Jackie Chan. Will produced this film and as both father and producer was demanding and relentless, which often led to tension between him and his son. All the scenes had to be perfect, and when the film seemed to be finished, Will extended filming by three months, which caused conflict between the two.. Will's upbringing and approach to work were influenced by his own father, who was strict and disciplined. His father believed that success came only through hard work and sacrifice. Will took these values and applied them to his own life and to the upbringing of his children. However, this approach was challenging for Jaden and he felt that his father was pushing him out of his own fear of failure. In 2012, while Will was watching a TV show about survivors of life-threatening situations, he came across a story of a father and son who were lost in the wilderness. This story inspired Will to come up with an idea for a new movie that could repair his relationship with Jaden. "After Earth" tells the story of a father and son who crash land on an uninhabited planet and the son must embark on a dangerous journey to save his father. During the filming of "After Earth", Will decided to change his approach. He was no longer a stern and unforgiving director, but became a supportive father. He realized that he needed to support his son and help him grow instead of constantly pushing him. This new approach proved to be effective. One of Will's proudest moments as a father was when Jaden insisted on the set and asked for his father's support in resolving a conflict with the crew. Although "After Earth" was commercially unsuccessful, the filming of the movie produced a real victory in the form of an improved relationship between father and son. Will became someone Jaden could rely on, not an enemy who constantly pressured him. Thus, this film project not only strengthened their relationship, but also allowed Will to reevaluate his parenting methods and learn how to be a better father.

Death of a father

One of the most important lessons Will Smith learned is that it's easier to create a compelling story when you know the ending. This rule, familiar in filmmaking, led him to consider the end of his father's life. Will and his father, known as Daddio, had a complicated relationship. He was strict, disciplined and often violent, which scarred Will for life. However, when Daddio became ill and had only weeks to live, Will decided to make sure his father could go in peace. Will spent five months preparing for his role in the film "Collateral Beauty," where he played a father trying to cope with the death of his daughter. This preparation affected him deeply, and when he learned of his father's terminal illness, he decided to help him leave with a sense of reconciliation and peace. On one of his last nights, Will sat by his father's bedside and told him that he had done everything right in his life. He told him that he had been a good father and that he could leave peacefully when he was ready. The father, who never shied away from confrontation and always maintained a hard outer shell, seemed deeply affected by these words. Although he hadn't stopped watching TV, his eyes filled with tears. Two weeks after that conversation, Daddio died. For Will, it was a moment of reconciliation and closure to one of the most complicated relationships of his life. He realized that although his father had many faults and caused him much pain, he had also shaped him and taught him values that helped him achieve success. This experience brought Will deep understanding and acceptance. Life is about how we deal with our demons and how we can find peace in reconciliation. Will learned that true strength lies in forgiveness and understanding, which allowed him to live life to the fullest and continue to build his career and relationships with his family with a new perspective.
